“Shaw and Gaikwad are there, but this guy will give you massive hundreds”
Ashish Nehra, who played for India as a fast bowler in the past, has made a bold prediction about a batter who is only 23 years old. According to Nehra, this batter is a better bet than players like Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
In the aftermath of India’s early elimination from the Mahadev Book Twenty20 World Cup, the squad has been going through a period of change, particularly in Twenty20 Internationals. Hardik Pandya is mentoring the younger players and guiding them into the new age of Indian cricket. This younger bunch is anticipated to carry Indian cricket forward and do what MS Dhoni and his youthful brigade did in 2007 when they won the T20 World Cup in 2007. India’s visit of New Zealand is the first step towards the goal that is mission T20 World Cup 2024.
There are so many talented young people
The fact that there are so many talented young people available in India is one of the country’s greatest strengths. Many more rising players are currently on standby, in addition to the current squad that competed in the Twenty20 Internationals and is currently in the middle of the One-Day International series in New Zealand. Names like Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad, both of whom are strong openers and have the potential to represent India in that role in the future, spring to mind. Both of these players are now lighting up the domestic circuit. However, former left-arm quick Ashish Nehra is of the opinion that Shubman Gill is currently in first place in the competition to become India’s next full-time opener. Nehra believes that Gill is the top candidate for the position.
“In both 50-over and test cricket,
Shubman Gill is a player who has the potential to score many hundreds. He is the type of player who adapts his game to the circumstances of the moment, and that is just what he has been doing here as well. After the break, when Suryakumar Yadav was batting magnificently, he (Gill) had a different mindset because he had all these gears. He had a different thinking before the rain, and he had a different mindset after the break. He is one of the bright spots in the picture. There are far too many names to mention, such as Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad, but there is no question that Shubman Gill is right up there with the best of them “During the second one-day international match between India and New Zealand in Hamilton, which was washed out, Nehra said the following while speaking to Prime Video.
Gill’s stint with the Gujarat Titans
During Gill’s stint with the Gujarat Titans earlier this year in IPL 2022, Nehra was able to observe the young player’s development and watch him mature. And Nehra, who is GT’s head coach, may very well be correct in his evaluation of the situation. During his time playing for India this year, Gill has been in blisteringly good form. The 23-year-old batsman scored 205 runs over the course of three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in the West Indies, including two fifties. He then went on to amass 245 runs over the course of three innings against Zimbabwe, where he achieved his first century for India.
Gill continued that form into the future and is continuing it in New Zealand, where he made a half-century in the first one-day international (Mahadev Book ODI) in Auckland and remained unbeaten on 45 at Seddon Park. Both of these scores were achieved at the venue.
